Trusted Remodelers Serving Muskego

Muskego grew up around its lakes, and the housing stock shows it. Around Little Muskego Lake and Big Muskego Lake you’ll find former cottages that became year-round homes, often added onto in stages by different hands. Away from the water, most of Muskego was built out from the 1960s onward — ranches, split-levels, and newer subdivisions along Janesville Road and Racine Avenue, many on generous lots.

2nd Life Home Remodeling is family-owned and located about 10 minutes north in New Berlin. Muskego is our immediate neighbor, and we’ve been remodeling here for 20+ years. Lake-adjacent homes need particular attention to moisture, foundations, and additions that were never quite finished right. Newer subdivision homes usually need the opposite — opening up a floor plan that made sense in 1994 and doesn’t now.

Remodeling in Muskego: Local Know-How

What Muskego homeowners should know
Permitting
Muskego permits go through Building Inspection at City Hall (W182 S8200 Racine Ave; department (262) 679-4145, inspections (262) 679-4037). Muskego requires that whoever submits the permit hold both a Dwelling Contractor Certification and a Dwelling Contractor Qualification Certification — we carry Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor License #1192772 and pull the permit ourselves. Properties on private septic may also need a Preliminary Site Evaluation.
Home styles & era
Former lake cottages converted to year-round homes around Little and Big Muskego Lake; 1960s–1980s ranches, split-levels, and raised ranches; and newer subdivision homes on larger lots along Janesville Road and Racine Avenue.
Older-home notes
Lake-area homes here often carry piecemeal additions, undersized headers, and moisture in crawlspaces or lower levels. Homes on private well and septic need those systems considered before a bathroom or kitchen adds fixtures. We check all of it before we scope the job.
Climate
Lake-effect moisture, hard freeze-thaw cycles, and humid summers make drainage, insulation, and vapor control especially important on Muskego’s lower levels and lake-adjacent homes.

“The communication throughout the process was excellent, and the online system they use to track project updates is the best I’ve used. Their pricing is quite competitive and we were very happy with the quality of the work.”

Muskego Remodeling FAQs

Does my Muskego contractor need to be state-certified?
Yes. Muskego requires that whoever submits the building permit hold both a Dwelling Contractor Certification and a Dwelling Contractor Qualification Certification — without both, the permit can’t be filed. We hold Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor License #1192772 and apply directly, so it’s never a holdup.
Can you remodel a lake home or converted cottage?
Yes, and it’s common work for us here. Converted cottages often have layered additions, undersized framing, and moisture issues in crawlspaces or lower levels. We open things up carefully, verify what’s actually holding the house up, and build from there.
We’re on a private well and septic — does that change a bathroom remodel?
It can. Adding fixtures changes the load on a private septic system, and some properties need a Preliminary Site Evaluation before the City will issue a permit. We flag it during design rather than discovering it mid-project.
How far is 2nd Life from Muskego?
About 10 minutes north in New Berlin (18480 W. National Ave, New Berlin, WI 53146) — Muskego is our next-door neighbor. Family-owned since 2003.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor License #1192772, NARI Certified Member, BBB A+ since 2011, and a one-year workmanship warranty on every project.
